PUBLIC RELATIONS SPECIALIST
A case study of Western Washington University Scholars Week | Apr. - June 2024
When my colleagues and I teamed up with WWU Scholars Week, they had been established on campus for about 25 years and aimed at creating a space to celebrate student academic excellence.
We began by conducting a thorough review of the client’s online presence and branding across various social media platforms. This included evaluating their content, branding elements and public-facing assets. We also interviewed event organizers to gain deeper insights into their operations and outreach strategies.
Our analysis identified several gaps in the client's public outreach and communication strategies. We noted a lack of consistent engagement and excitement among the audience, which we believed could be improved to achieve better results.
To address these gaps, we focused on increasing audience excitement and engagement. Our strategy involved curating, managing and executing a campus-wide raffle to boost engagement. By reaching out to various campus departments and programs, we secured attractive and incentivizing donations for raffle baskets.
Within this campaign, I designed and produced digital and print promotional materials to advertise the raffle effectively within the WWU community. Additionally, I created hypothetical press releases, fundraising eBlasts and social media posts that the Scholars Week committee could review and utilize in the future.
At the outset of our campaign, the client lacked an established social media presence and consistent branding across their content. Recognizing this gap, my colleagues and I collaborated to create a hypothetical brand style guide and comprehensive social media plan for the client. In the lead-up to the event, we leveraged existing social media accounts and other communication channels to reach a broad audience, demonstrating the immense value of these platforms in connecting with the client's target demographic.
The raffle was a significant success, attracting about 200 students, community members and event attendees. This initiative not only enhanced engagement but also strengthened the overall visibility and excitement surrounding Scholars Week.
Our efforts to bridge the communication gaps and foster a more engaged audience yielded positive results. By focusing on strategic engagement activities, we successfully enhanced the public perception and participation in WWU Scholars Week, contributing to its continued legacy of celebrating academic excellence.

DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS
Western Washington University Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Chapter | Feb. - June 2024

As a PR professional, channeling my skillset into reviving the WWU PRSSA Chapter, which went dormant during the pandemic, has been both a challenging and rewarding experience.
When my fellow Chapter officers and I began the revival process, the Chapter had no presence on campus, and the student body was largely unaware of the national PRSA organization. We had our work cut out for us.
In my role as the Director of Social Media and Communications, I revitalized the Chapter's Instagram account. Throughout this process, I recognized the necessity of creating a comprehensive brand and social media guide to help me reestablish the social media account and for the Chapter's future. My visually appealing print and digital content promoted our events and initiatives, generating excitement and engagement. These visuals not only captured the attention of our target audience but also effectively conveyed our message and brand identity.
Through my efforts, I created an environment that was educational and professional, yet fun, featuring membership raffles, student spotlights and exclusive sneak peeks into upcoming events. This strategy paid off, as within the first two months of my role, our Instagram following increased by 34% and profile activity surged by 2,139%.
Additionally, I was responsible for all external communication with industry professionals to establish partnerships and opportunities for our members. By reaching out to these professionals, I helped provide valuable networking and learning experiences, enhancing our members' understanding of the industry and potential career paths.
I also played a key role in event planning, coordinating logistics and ensuring the smooth execution of our Chapter's activities. Whether organizing guest lectures, PR agency tours, or networking events, I worked diligently to create meaningful experiences that enriched our members' professional development.
Through these efforts, I significantly contributed to the growth and success of the WWU PRSSA Chapter, helping to create a vibrant and engaging community for aspiring PR professionals.

EVENTS & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT INTERN
During my internship at Lighthouse Mission Ministries, I took on various roles to support the organization's goals and foster community engagement. One of my responsibilities included sending out monthly donor thank you letters, ensuring our supporters felt appreciated and informed about the impact of their contributions. In times severe weather conditions I wrote and sent appeals to our donor base, effectively communicating our urgent requirements and rallying support on behalf of the Mission.
I also assisted in curating and managing content for the Mission's Instagram account. This included creating engaging posts to raise awareness about our activities and needs while balancing "ask" posts with feature posts to ensure donor fatugue was not present. Additionally, I contributed to feature stories in the summer and fall newsletters, highlighting key events and milestones of the Mission.
A significant part of my role involved assisting in the event planning and execution of the Mission's annual Drive For Joy fundraiser. This event unites the community to donate supplies for the shelter, and I played a crucial part in organizing and promoting it to ensure its success.
I also evaluated the volunteer experience, looking for areas that could be streamlined for better efficiency. By identifying and addressing these areas, I helped enhance overall volunteer engagement and operational effectiveness. Furthermore, I sat in on and contributed to meetings for the Advancement Team, providing insights and support for ongoing projects and strategic initiatives.
Through these experiences, I honed my skills in communication, social media management, event coordination, and process improvement, all while contributing to a cause I deeply care about.
